Camp K-12 is proud to announce the Student of the week, Arjun SantoshKumar, a class tenth student from Chennai and one of the youngest entrepreneurs of the world.
Arjun found his entrepreneurship skills at an early age of 13, when he started his company LateraLogics—a technology solutions company with a vision to come up with innovative but affordable technology solutions that could help make people’s life easier. Already the CEO of his company, this tenth grader is giving qualified app developers a run for their money with his talent and vision . He draws inspiration from many great people including Steve Jobs and Pranav Mistry.
A small kid with big dreams, made us believe that best things do come in small packages.
Let’s find out more about this wonder boy.
How he got interested in Computers?
Arjun was lucky enough to learn computer when he was just two years old and got exposed to all computer technology areas, including programming, but by using age appropriate tools. His fascination for science and technology made him realize that he had a flair for electronics and so he started spending time building electronic gadgets. And it was just the beginning.
He says, “When I grew up, in my eighth year, I started working on my robotics kit, which helped me practice my programming skills along with my interest in electronics and mechanics. A couple of years back, when my dad bought his first smartphone, due to my curiosity and interest, I started making Android apps using Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s programming tool called App Inventor” and he mastered the tool in a very short span of time.
Let’s know more about his company LateraLogics.
At LateraLogics, the focus is on developing computer and mobile applications that serve as solutions for everyday problems and that can transform people’s lives. Its motto is ‘Great Solutions come from Small Problems’. He says, “I have always been most excited about the kind of possibilities that emerging technologies offer to help us to make lives better. The inspiration/idea behind starting LateraLogics was how mobile technologies are being used nowadays to solve critical issues and the immense possibilities they carry to make life easier”.
He was passionate about starting his own company at a young age and his confidence and conviction allowed him to do that.
He created his first app called ‘Ez School Bus Locator’ which bagged first prize in MIT’s App Inventor Contest.
He says, ”Once, due to heavy rains, I reached home very late from school and found my parents worried. That is when I thought of developing a solution for this problem (and that is how Ez School Bus Locator was born)”. It is an innovative school bus and student tracker Android phone app available in the market that:
- Is custom made for schools/parents
- Helps parents track their ward’s school bus as well their ward’s availability (in the bus)
- Supports both non-Internet phones along with Android phones to get the details
This twin-app solution comprises two modules:
- Ez School Bus Locator (Parent)
- Ez School Bus Locator (Attender)
The solution helps parents with Android phones (with the Parent Module installed in their phones) track their ward’s school bus on a map, in real time. The app also shows their ward’s availability in the bus, the distance of the bus from home, and the time it would take the bus to reach home. Parents with normal phones (non-Internet) can also track their ward’s school bus location and their ward’s availability in the bus by just sending an SMS!
His idea won first prize in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT’S) App Inventor Contest in January 2013. The judges praised this app as ‘one of the most creative and well thought out apps of any age group in the contest’! This app was also a finalist in the mBillionth South Asia Award 2013.
This (twin) app is available for free download on Google Play Store here.
Girls can now freely move out of their houses with his safety app ‘iSafeGuard’.
His second Android phone app ‘iSafeGuard’ (personal safety app for women & teens) is a tribute to young girls and women who face great challenges to live safely in today’s world! This app is aimed at helping women and teens in distress (both with smart phones and ordinary phones) to:
- Send distress calls (SOS messages) with location details to friends and family members whose numbers have been pre-set
- Alert local community (volunteers who have this app installed in their mobile devices and who are in the vicinity of the incident) near the spot to reach out to the person in danger, without having to wait for the police.
This app is available for free download on Google Play Store here.
He created another innovative app iRobot!
‘iRobot’— is an innovative smart phone solution that helps you to control your LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robots in the most intuitive ways — by tapping, speaking, or messaging (SMS)!
This app is available for download on Google Play Store here.
Are you thinking that’s the end? well no, Arjun has many more unique apps which you can check out on his website.
Arjun has set an example of “It’s never too early to start”.
He eagerly looks forward to a day when entrepreneurship is included as part of school studies by the governments and educational bodies. He says, “As a young entrepreneur, I believe that entrepreneurship education should start right from the school level, and have been advocating for this cause”.
He strongly believes that “Great solutions come from small problems”. His message to other young people is : “To look for problems around you, and get inspired from them. You’ll see a lot of opportunities to use your (own) skills to make this world a better place to live!”
As rightly said, being small has nothing to do with how big you can dream.
His top three accomplishments.
- Winner of the ‘National Child Award for Exceptional Achievements 2014 (for Computer Technology)’ instituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. He received the award from our honorable President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on 14th November for Tamil Nadu.
- Winner (First Prize) of the ‘App Inventor Bug Finding Contest’ conducted worldwide by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) of the United States of America in January 2014.
- Winner (First Prize) of the ‘App Inventor App Contest’(K-8 category) conducted worldwide by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in January 2013 for my mobile phone app ‘Ez School Bus Locator’.
He also enjoys guiding others with the knowledge and skills he possess, wherever possible. He had the opportunity to guide the Dharavi Girls team (Mumbai) on their Technovation project last year. Again this year, he had the opportunity to assist the mentor team from Minnesota in the ‘Technovation Global Program’as the role of an ADVISER.
His future plans.
He says, ”My new interests are on Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), since I believe these (individually as well as in combination) have the potential to change the game in the near future. I’m presently researching to bring out innovative and affordable applications (in these spaces) that could transform our lives.”
His dream is to bring up LateraLogics to one of the most innovative and successful companies in the world.
Kudos to him!!
